The Repaired Method: How Six Therapy Frameworks Become One Structured Process
Relationship advice mostly tells you what to understand. The research traditions behind couples therapy each explain a real piece of why conflict goes wrong. What almost none of them hand you is a sequence: what to do first, what not to do yet, and how two upset people get from a bad moment to an actual agreement.
The Repaired Method is that sequence. It is the process our product walks two people through, and this post is the plain-language description of it: where it comes from, what the steps are, and why each one exists.
Where it comes from
We built the Method as a synthesis of six research-backed traditions. Each contributes something the others lack, and we have written a full deep dive on each:
- Nonviolent Communication contributes the language: observations instead of judgements, needs instead of accusations.
- The Gottman Method contributes the behavioural map: flooding, the Four Horsemen, and the finding that accepting repair attempts separates couples who last from couples who do not.
- Emotionally Focused Therapy contributes the bond: conflict as a protest against disconnection, and the negative cycle as the real enemy.
- Internal Family Systems contributes the inner map: why you say things you do not mean when a protective part takes over.
- Relational Life Therapy contributes accountability: dropping the losing strategies and speaking from the wise adult.
- Acceptance and Commitment Therapy contributes values: acting from what matters rather than from the hottest feeling in the room.
The synthesis argument, and what all six frameworks quietly assume, is its own post: why structured repair works. Inside the product, none of this vocabulary appears. You never need to know what EFT stands for to use the thing the research recommends.
The design principles
Four decisions define the Method, and each one comes straight out of the research.
Regulation before dialogue. Past a certain point of physiological arousal, productive conversation is unavailable: people hear more negatively and respond worse. So the Method checks readiness before anything else, and pauses are built in rather than treated as failure.
Both sides first. Standard advice says listen first. But the moment that makes listening necessary is the moment that makes it hardest, which is why listen-first advice fails. In the Method, both people get their whole side out privately, uninterrupted, before either has to hold the other person’s. Nobody performs, and by default nobody goes second.
Enforced checkpoints. By default, neither person reads the other’s side until they have written their own. The app enforces the sequence, which means neither person can rush the other, retaliate early, or read ahead. The one exception is a choice: if the other person has not started, the one who began can send their side early, and it is read first.
Concrete over vague. Repairs end in one specific, realistic agreement with a check-in schedule, not a promise to communicate better.
The shape of the process
The Method moves two people through five phases, plus check-ins afterwards. In broad strokes: you each arrive and settle separately, you each get your whole side out privately, you prove you heard each other before anything is debated, you each offer a repair in your own words, and you finish with one concrete agreement that both of you confirm. Each phase takes minutes, not hours, and both people complete every one; nobody skips ahead, and nobody goes second.
We are deliberately not printing the full playbook here. Not because it is secret (the process is described more fully on the approach page), but because the Method’s value is not in knowing the steps. It is in having them held for you when you are least able to hold them yourself: the prompts at each moment, the checkpoints that keep either of you from reading ahead or rushing the other, and the guardrails when the temperature climbs. A list of steps cannot do that. A process can.
What makes it a method
Any single idea above appears somewhere in the self-help canon. What makes the Method different is that it is a protocol: ordered, bilateral, and enforced. The order does the work that willpower usually fails to do mid-conflict. You do not have to remember to regulate before speaking, or resist reading their side before writing yours; the structure remembers for you. That is the whole thesis: most couples do not lack care, they lack a sequence.
If you want to see how this compares to therapy, communication books, and other apps, that is its own page. And the fastest way to understand the Method is the one that costs nothing: try a repair.
