Repaired

What to do the night of a fight

The first hours after a fight decide how the next conversation goes.

Why this is hard

Right after a fight, both people are still flooded. Trying to settle it that night usually restarts the argument, and going to bed without a plan leaves both of you guessing.

How Repaired helps

  1. Pause before anything else. In Repaired, you start by rating how calm you feel, and if you are running hot, a short breathing exercise is offered before you write a word.
  2. Write your side while it is fresh, privately, without sending it. Getting it out of your head makes it easier to sleep and easier to hear the other person later.
  3. Agree on one thing only: when you will come back to it. Then invite them, so each of you can write your side before you talk.

What the research says

“If your heart rate exceeds 100 beats per minute, you won’t be able to hear what your spouse is trying to tell you no matter how hard you try.”
Dr. John Gottman, who adds that recovering takes twenty minutes or more. The Gottman Institute: Physiological Self-Soothing

When something else fits better

If anyone is unsafe tonight, leave the situation and contact emergency services or a crisis line. Repaired is not a crisis service.

Questions

Should we sort it out before we go to sleep?
Not if either of you is still upset. Agreeing on when you will talk is enough for tonight.
Can I write my side now and invite them tomorrow?
Yes. A solo repair keeps your side, and you can invite them whenever you are ready.
